Disappearing Bodega/Corner Store#2

September 16, 2008

This one was located on the corner of Gates ave. and St.James place. They’ve been closed about eight years now due to a fire. When it first happened there was speculation that there was something shady about the fire being that store owners just signed a new lease. It was furthered fueled by the fact that it took almost ten years to renovate.

My most vivid memory of this store is taking my oldest daughter there to get a snack for her very first day of school…and everyday thereafter! The bodega was run by a Dominican family who all chipped in so it was very common to get served by a pre-teen behind the counter(check ya’ change before leaving the store! lol).  I wish them all the best and hope the rumors were just that..rumors!  I’m sure everyone has a wishlist of prospective businesses, let’s see how long it stays vacant after eight years of “renovation”.

I heard (through Brownstoner) that the renovations have already attracted the ire of Landmarks. Seems like a lost opportunity – and they aren’t really done.

Sheezz they just stuck some bricks in there instead of making something of it…
i remember that bodege, it was the only one on gates unless you walked to classon or up to vanderbilt, when i was a kid I used to hang on cambridge aft church… at that was the only place really to get chips and what not, since grand was still like bucktown and the bodegas were more to’ up.

That metal fence is wack too.

Funny how you lament the loss of bodegas as do I yet on certain other Brooklyn sites people complain about bodegas existing and opening. Yet another example of the vast cultural divide.

Yes X, this is very true and part of the reason this blog exists.
