Rambunctious Racoons Rile Residents in Clinton Hill

Racoons in Clinton Chill

Last week it was alligators in a Long Island Pathmark parking lot. This week raccoons are confronting residents of Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. To make matters worse, these raccoons have real chutzpah. One resident says that one raccoon was trying to enter her home, while another actually got up on his hind legs and began to hiss at her.

And as if this wasn’t bad enough these masked marauders are almost impossible to capture, even by the most expert of trappers. According to Rich Weddle of the Animal Husbandry Department at the Liberty Science Center, raccoons “are extremely intelligent animals. In terms of trying to trap them, once they’ve been trapped once they’ll know not to go in that trap again.”

Clinton Hill residents have tried to call 3-1-1 for some help (the phone number for the city’s non-emergency services) but have been told that the city cannot get involved as long as the raccoons appear healthy and normal. If they were disoriented in some way, or rabid, then the city could offer help. Weddle says that there is a risk that the raccoons could carry rabies, and they can also easily spread distemper and parasites such as fleas and ticks, which have the potential to harm dogs.
