Rabbi Kenneth Brander On Sterling

May 1, 2014

Donald Sterling, owner of the LA Clippers, was recently condemned for his racist remarks which were caught on tape and released by the celebrity gossip website TMZ. Among his hate speech against blacks were also remarks which insisted that Israeli society as a whole shares his racist views.

Disputing that assertion is Rabbi Kenneth Brander, Vice President for University and Community Life and the Dean of the Yeshiva University Center for the Jewish Future. Kenny Brander, who made his statement on Holocaust Remembrance Day, explained that Sterling’s description of Israeli and Jewish culture could not be further from the truth.

“His comments do not reflect Jews or Jewish tradition,” Rabbi Kenneth Brander said, referring to Sterling’s remarks. “Judaism is about embracing people, about dignity, about empowerment.”

Apparently not only is Sterling wrong about Jews, but also about Israel, according to former NBA player Anthony Parker. From 2000 until 2006 Parker played for the professional basketball team Maccabbi Tel Aviv in Israel. He says the experience forever changed his life.

“Every chance I get, I always tell players that they need to go, not to believe what they see on the news, that they’ll love it,” Parker told SLAM Magazine in 2010. “So far, it’s the best basketball experience of my life and holds a special place in my heart.”

A very different picture of Israel than what Sterling claims.
