Senator Schumer Introduces Bill to Ban K2 Components

Spice was originally sold as an incense, but has now swept the military community with controversy as a ‘legal’ designer drug. However, Marine Corps Order 5355.1, issued Jan. 27, directly prohibits the use, distribution, sale and possession of it and others like it.

The fight to reduce the danger posed by the use of K2, also known as “synthetic marijuana” was intensified last week when Senator Charles Schumer introduce a federal bill to ban some of the more common ingredients of the dangerous drug. Schumer was reacting to a serious uptick in the number of emergency room visits this past month in New York City as a result of K2 use..

New York has been struggling to reduce the number of people harmed by K2. Since January, 2015, the city seemed to be seemed to be succeeding. According to a city health department report released last week, there have been about 8,000 cases of people going to the emergency room because of K2 use. In June, 2016 the number was the lowest it had been at any point during the past year.

Then July came, and between the 11th and 13th of the month 130 K2 victims had to be transported to emergency rooms. On July 13th alone 33 people were sent to the hospital all in one incident.

There is already a city law against the manufacture, sale, or possession of “synthetic cannabinoids.” On Sunday Schumer said that it is impossible to keep up with the labs making K2, since they are always changing their recipes. He said that only a federal ban will improve the situation.

“Banning these drugs quickly will help the feds step up their game of whack-a-mole so that we can help stem the tide of synthetic drug use here in New York City and across the country,” Schumer said.

From Building Ships to Building Companies: New Lab Open for Business

Tuesday was the opening day of New Lab, branded as the future of tech and manufacturing creativity and innovation in Downtown Brooklyn.

A former space for ship building, the 84,000-square-foot building had been abandoned until David Belt, the Lab’s founder, discovered it in 2011.

“It was still a ruin, but one of the most inspiring buildings I had ever been in,” Belt said.

Located at 63 Flushing Avenue in Brooklyn’s Navy Yard, New Lab hopes to host as many as 50 companies with 350 workers, according to president of the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation, David Ehrenberg.

Not only will New Lab house offices and shared work spaces, it will have available high-end product design and manufacturing tools that entrepreneurs can use to create prototypes of their products. Ehrenberg explained that the goal of New Lab is to help companies to expand out of this space, which is acting as a kind of incubator, and leave the Lab and “take more space in the Navy Yard and create more jobs.”

Belt said that during the decades the building was used to assemble ships it was a state-of-the-art manufacturing space. Once again it is hosting “sate of the art manufacturing.”

Jamaican Chef’s Dream Comes True in Fort Greene Restaurant

Jamaican-born Lancelot Brown has always dreamed of opening his own restaurant, and now that dream has become a reality. Ever since he got involved in the culinary arts, completing not just one, but two culinary degrees, Brown has been hoping to one day have a restaurant to call his own.

Brown recently opened the Jamaica Grill on Myrtle Avenue in Fort Greene, between Hall Street and Washington Avenue.

“I knew from the first day I started in the culinary field I always wanted to open my own restaurant,” said Brown, a resident of Canarsie. “It’s one of the dreams I wanted to accomplish and accomplishing it is a momentous achievement for me.”

Brown moved to public housing in Canarsie from Jamaica 19 years ago, and has worked in other people’s eateries all over New York.

Opening his own restaurant is not the only dream that has come true for Brown. Twelve years ago he broke his back. The doctors told him he would most likely never recover the ability to walk, making the prospect of continuing his beloved profession difficult, if not impossible.

Brown however defied the doctors’ prognosis, and after years of intense physical therapy he is back up on his own two feet, in command of his very own kitchen.

“I wanted to do something more, because I knew I could do more,” Brown explained.

Now Brown is preparing his favorite dishes from his home country, which he says are not often done expertly.

“It’s one of those cuisines that you either have to go to Jamaica to have it or find somewhere that prepares it really well,” he said.

Dry Harbor Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center, conveniently located in Middle Harbor, New York, has been delivering excellent care to its patients for over 30 years. The center can accommodate as many as 360 patients, offering both long-term and short-term care, according to need.

You probably don’t need an interactive map to know that Brooklyn is a crowded place to live. However, if you like to wallow in your pain, StreetEasy has just the thing for you. Its an interactive map proving what you have known all along: Brooklyn is CROWDED!

SteetEasy took information from the US Census to find out how many people lived in each home/apartment in NYC in 2013. A number over 1.5 per room (and that’s all rooms, living rooms, dining rooms as well as bedrooms) then that home was called “crowded.”
Brooklyn placed second in terms of crowding in New York, after the Bronx. But Brooklyn’s rate of change came in first place in terms of adding people to living spaces between 2010 and 2013.

Below are the top ten Brooklyn neighborhoods for crowding, with the percentage indicated referring to the percentage of the total homes which are considered crowded. Since everything is relative, and maybe New Yorkers shouldn’t be complaining so much, understand that the national crowding rate is 3.3 percent, (3.3 percent of all US homes are considered crowded) while in the Big Apple 8.9 percent of all homes have over 1.5 people per room dwelling within. By the way, Fort Green-Clinton Hill ranked 33rd out of 42 neighborhoods, with only 4.8 percent of households “crowded.”

Brooklyn Victory Garden Closing After Five Years

After five years of selling locally sourced meat, cheese, breads, flowers, herbs, and vegetables, Clinton Hill’s Brooklyn Victory Garden has announced it is closing shop as soon as its inventory is exhausted, which could be as soon as this week.

In addition, Brooklyn Victory Garden sold ethically and sustainable-sourced food and gifts to residents and all who stopped by.

This closure is just one more in the neighborhood as Brooklyn continues its gentrification to elite, hipster status, rents climb through the roof, and competition becomes fierce.

To speed things along the shop is offering a 35 percent discount on everything, until there is nothing left. Tess and Tom, the owners, do not anticipate the store will stay open past Saturday, February 6. So come in, buy something, and say good-bye.

Buffered Bike Lane Proposal Approved by Transportation Committee of CB 2

The Department of Transportation revealed at a District 2 community board meeting last Tuesday that the DOT is hoping to add a buffered bike lane to Lafayette Avenue between Fulton Street and Classon Avenue.

The proposal predicts that the bike lane will be ready sometime this summer.

The plan will create a bike lane which is set off from vehicular traffic using a striped, painted section. One lane of traffic will have to be removed to accommodate the three-foot-wide buffer and the five-foot-wide bike lane. Lafayette Avenue is a one-way street heading east. In addition, the parking lane will lose one foot, shrinking from 10 feet down to only nine.

It is also believed that the new bike lane will increase the use of CitiBike at the five stations found on Lafayette Avenue. Since cyclists are reluctant to travel down Lafayette eastward, those stations are not used much. The DOT is hoping that a safer passage will bring a larger number of bikes to those five CitiBike stations.

The plan also proposes that the speed limit be increased from 20 to 25mph, and traffic signals will also be readjusted. The change in the speed limit and signals should help reduce traffic congestion on the street.

Community board 2’s transportation committee unanimously approved the DOT’s plan, asking the DOT to present its plan to other community boards before heading forward with the street redesign. They also would like to see if there are additional ways for the DOT to further deter double parking in the bike lane.
