September 28, 2011

A new independent school has moved to the Bedford-Stuyvesant/Clinton Hill border; the Brooklyn Waldorf School moved into the historic “Claver Castle” building. The building was not in

use until now, but in the 1930s was part of the St. Peter Claver Roman Catholic Church and served as nun’s housing, classrooms and a gymnasium.

“In essence, his building was like a YMCA before the YMCA existed in the neighborhood,” said Val Mello, director of the Brooklyn Waldorf School.

The Claver School closed in 1988, and now will serve as the new site for the Brooklyn Waldorf school after 23 empty years.
